Sufism
Symposium 2005
They came from near (San Francisco) and they came from far (Africa, New Zealand, and more) but Sufis from around the world again joined together at the 12th Annual Sufism Symposium Celebration in South San Francisco on the weekend of April 29-May 1, 2005. This Symposium was entitled Sufism: A Practicum - Theories and Practice.
The Symposium got off to a scintillating start Friday afternoon with a panel presented by the Sufism & Psychology Forum on theories and practices of Psychology. Friday evening at the Symposium featured Taneen Sufi Music Ensemble and Friends, Talia, and Dr. Neil Douglas-Klotz (Saadi Shakur Chisti) playing Sufi music with beautiful poetry reading
The conference center at the Embassy Suites came alive on Saturday morning with the awakening voice of Sheikh Ahmed Tijani Ben Omar who gave the opening prayers. Dr. Seyedeh Nahid Angha eloquently welcomed the attendees.
After a day of panels, on Saturday evening, the Mevlevi Order of America performed a richly-textured sema that noticeably deeply moved everyone in the audience. Following the sema, the entire Sufi family in attendance joined together for Zekr that left all the participants in a peaceful state.
The Symposium resumed Sunday morning where it left off as Dr. Saadi Neil Douglas-Klotz led off the program with an audience participation learning and singing of the Fatiha. More panels followed throughout the day.
The Symposium ended in the early evening with a closing prayer and the warm and caring words of Dr. Shah Nazar Seyed Ali Kianfar who expressed his love for all that attended.
Another year and another Symposium thus again brought light to the hearts of those who had the opportunity by the grace and will of God to participate.
The
Annual Sufism Symposium is a weekend of unity and self discovery
presented by the International
Association of Sufism. It is an international gathering of
delegates from Sufi Orders of many cultures and backgrounds. In the
past, representative from Bangladesh, Canada, England, Ghana, Jordan,
Kuwait, Pakistan, Persia, the Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, Turkey,
the United States and many more participated.

The
annual celebration of Sufism is one of the most significant achievements
of the International
Association of Sufism. This international, multicultural
festival has brought prominent Sufi masters from around the world to
the United States to celebrate this most influential school of civilization
and to share their wisdom with a wide range of English-speaking audience.
The success of the symposium is only made possible through the efforts
of Seyedeh Dr. Nahid Angha, Shah Nazar Seyed Dr. Ali Kianfar, and the
prominent members of the International Association of Sufism. The
Symposium is an opportunity for all to learn about the ancient school
of Islamic Mysticism. Music, poems, and Sufi practices help in celebrating
a weekend of spiritual empowerment. In addition to lectures and workshops,
the Sufism Symposium exhibits books,
audio
tapes, video
tapes, Sufi
publications, informational materials and art from Sufi Orders
and international publishers.
Each
symposium focuses on a particular theme to address the immediate and
universal needs of humanity. Each symposium is a historical event where
speakers and participants from around the world are enraptured in camaraderie
as their longing to unite with the Divine transcended cultural and philosophical
barriers. A comprehensive report, audio tapes, and video tapes are available
from each gathering.
