Celebration
2003 Sufism Symposium
"Healing Arts of Expression & Impression"
March
28-30, 2003
Embassy Suites Hotel
San Rafael, California
(San Francisco Bay Area)
The IAS celebrated its tenth Annual Sufism Symposium as a Marin interfaith conference in March 2003, with the Healing Arts of Expressions and Impressions as its theme.
The conference joined Marin-based and international spiritual leaders, scholars, and practitioners, together with a large audience to explore themes of peace, well being, individual and global healing, in order to develop a dialogue amongst the traditions and cultures in Marin.
The Symposium opened with interfaith prayers and spiritual songs, continued with two interfaith panel discussions, a series of workshops, exhibitions addressing contemporary social, cultural, and religious issues as well as the topic "What is next for Marin?".
Panelists included speakers representing a number of faith traditions including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Brahma Kumaris, and Buddhism, as well as professions including psychologists, educators, and artists. Several delegates from other states and countries also participated. Panel discussions were complemented by a series of workshops and exhibitions, presenting experiential aspects of these sacred traditions.
The program included interfaith concerts presented by several musicians, and exhibitions showcased the spiritual artwork of several artists. The program provided an opportunity for the presenters and the attendees to celebrate their spiritual traditions and explore the traditions of their neighbors. National and international delegates provided a rich forum for discussions and celebrations and created an open dialogue between Marin delegates and its nation-wide as well as international communities.
The symposium hosted over 400 participants, exhibitors, and attendees, with hospitality and scholarships for those in need.
The Sufism Symposium received wide news coverage from a variety of news organizations.
A full report will be posted soon.
